Olive Tree (Olea Europaea): Description and Plant Care
- Evergreen, mature branching tree, very long-lived, narrow oblong leaves, grey-green foliage, silvery underneath, fragrant white flowers in late summer, edible green turning purple fruits, coastal gardens, Mediterranean style, tropical gardens, gravel gardens, patios, pots and containers, courtyards, formal Italian gardens,
- Growth Rate: Moderate up to 30cm per year.
- Position: Most soils, any well-drained fertile soil, loam, chalk, sand, clay, full sun, use added John Innes No 3 for containers or pots, added sharp sand, sheltered position preferred, water 1 x a week in summer, avoid waterlogging,
- Ideal Mature Specimen Tree: Maintained up to 4m high, ideal for pots and containers, displays, borders, low maintenance, Mediterranean gardens, patios, gravel gardens, terraces,
- H4: This variety Olea Europaea is hardy throughout most of the UK (-10 to -5).
- Pruning: No routine pruning required, low maintenance, you only need to remove damaged, congested or crossing growth shoots, or shoots that are growing in the wrong direction to keep it's shape, prune in spring or early summer.
